Wellness PDF Print E-mail

After trying all of the vet recommended prescription diets with no luck, I did some research to find other foods to try.  I purchased a 40 oz bag of dry Wellness healthy Weight and one can of Wellness in every flavor.  The ingredients in the dry food are: Deboned Chicken, Chicken Meal, Rice, Ground Barley, Ground Rice, Whitefish Meal, Natural Chicken Flavor, Tomato Pomace, Chicken liver, Oat Fiber, Cranberries, Olive Oil, Chicory Root Extract, Cranberry Extract Powder, Cranberry Fiber, Flaxseed, Potassium Chloride, Vitamins (Vitamin E Supplement, Niacin, Ascorbic Acid (Vitamin C), Thiamine Mononitrate, Calcium Pantothenate, Riboflavin, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride, Beta-Carotene, Vitamin A Supplement, Vitamin D-3 Supplement, Folic Acid, Biotin, Vitamin B-12 Supplement), Choline Chloride, Minerals (Zinc Proteinate, Zinc Sulfate, Iron Proteinate, Ferrous Sulfate, Copper Sulfate, Copper Proteinate, Manganese Proteinate, Manganese Sulfate, Calcium Iodate, Sodium Selenite), Glucosamine Hydrochloride, Chondroitin Sulfate, Yucca Schidigera Extract, Dried Kelp, l-Carnitine, Lactobacillus Plantarum, Enterococcus Faecium, Lactobacillus Casei, Lactobacillus Acidophilus, Taurine, Rosemary Extract.

As soon as I got home I mixed some of the wet food with the cats’ current wet food.  They loved it!  I then mixed some dry and offered it.  For the next week I noticed that they would eat the food I was taking them off of and not touch the Wellness until they were hungry in the middle of the night.  Hershel 9 lbs and Chester now 20 lbs like all of the canned flavors except for Beef and Chicken.  I do not know how the dry food is going to work out, but I am going to stick with it for a few months to see.

UPDATE

Hershel and Chester have now been eating Wellness dry food for 5 months.  For a treat I put about a dozen kibbles of Kit n' Kaboodle in with the dry.  They split a 5.5 oz can of wet food per day too.  Chester now weighs 16.6 lbs down from a little over 24 lbs a year and a half ago.  Hershel has stayed between 8 and 9 lbs.

Innova EVO PDF Print E-mail

After doing research I narrowed my options down to two cat foods that I wanted to try.  EVO and Wellness.  I purchased EVO Cat and Kitten Food and a can of wet food.  EVO has the key nutritional benefits of feeding a raw diet without the headache.  The ingredients are “based on ground chicken and turkey meat, bones, fat, cartilage and connective tissue.  It includes whole, raw fruits and vegetables which contain health promoting phytochemicals and micronutrients. EVO has Hi-Protein, Low-Carbs, and No Grains.”  I immediately started mixing the EVO in with my cat’s current food.  They ate everything around it and would wait until they were hungry in the middle of the night to eat the EVO.  After two weeks I had them completely switched over to EVO.  All of my cats were losing weight because they did not like it.  Three months passed and there still was no change in their acceptance.  I have read reviews where some cats just will not eat it.  So, I recommend buying the smallest bag and trying it to see if your cat will eat it.  Hopefully, you will have better luck than I did.

I broke down and purchased a Forever Litter Tray.  Since buying the Scoop Free Litter Box I have been trying to come up with ways to replace the litter tray less often.  The only thing that worked was reusing the cardboard litter tray with fresh litter.  I could reuse one tray two or three times and then it had to go.  If I’m going to reuse the tray I thought it only makes since to buy a Forever Litter Tray.  Then there is no worrying about leaking.  I am happy to say it works great!  Do yourself a favor and order one.

The website is: www.foreverlittertrays.com and it cost $39.95 plus shipping.  For me, shipping was $13.49.  I think it is worth $53.44.

The Best Catnip Toys PDF Print E-mail

We have two 12 year old cats and there is not much you can do to get them to play. This is one thing that works. I got tired of buying catnip mice for the cats and then they would only play with them a week and never touch them again. Solution: Refillable catnip toys! These are great. The toys come with packs of catnip and you just stuff the pack into an opening on the toy and close the velcro. I’ve found that when you run out of the packs of catnip you can pour loose into the toy and close it. The chili pepper is our house favorite. The toys are called Petlinks System MouseFull Refillable Catnip Toy and cost around $5 each.

Scoop Free Litter Box PDF Print E-mail

I finally caved and bought an automatic litter box. After a lot of research I decided to try out a Scoop Free Ultra. If you have cats and don't have one of these you should consider it.

The litter box uses a 2" deep litter cartridge that is prefilled with Scoop Free Crystals. Each tray cost about $16 and will last up to 30 days with one cat.  It is a little expensive, but if it works as advertised it will be worth it. You can also purchase a Forever Litter Tray or Permascoop Litter Tray which are permanent trays that cost around $50 If you have more than one cat, the cartridge will have to be replaced more often. We have two 13 yr old cats and one tray lasted 2 to 3 weeks. There is little to no smell!

The Ultra has a Health Counter that counts how many times a cat gets in the box. The box also has an adjustable rake delay timer that that can be set to rake 5, 10 or 20 minutes after the cat exits the box. If a cat gets in the box while the timer is counting down to scoop, the counter starts all over again. The sensors also keep the rake from activating while a cat is in the box.

The Ultra comes with a hood which will help keep litter in the box and give the cat some privacy. When Chester weighed 24lb he could not fit in the box with the hood on and  Hershel, our 8 1/2 lb cat, liked to stand on the side of the box. Chester is now under 20 lbs and does not have any trouble using the box with the hood on.  Hershel adjusted to the hood quickly.

If your cat covers his gifts up, you probably do not have to worry about things sticking to the rake. However, if they do not cover it up this may happen. There is an easy solution. Wait until the gift is dry, lift the box like you are going to change the litter cartridge, gently shake the box over the litter and the gift will fall off the rake. The refuse fills up in about 6 days with two cats. When it fills up I scoop the refuse which is no big deal because it's all dehydrated and then we're back in business for 6 days.

I've only found one thing that I would change. I wish I could use litter that clumps urine because once the crystals absorb urine, they are done.  If your cat tends to use one spot you will need to  take a scoop and mix the litter once per week.  There needs to be fresh litter moved to the spot most used in order for the litter to have proper absorption.
